Walgreens Offers Free Flu Vaccines

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Free flu shots will be available for uninsured and underinsured Dallas area residents at local Walgreens pharmacies, starting September 19. This fall, 12 area Walgreens, in conjunction with the City of Dallas, will offer flu vaccine while supplies last to individuals who can prove low income.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a flu shot for everyone over the age of six months and recommends vaccination every season in order to be fully protected against influenza. The flu is especially dangerous to at-risk populations, including those with asthma, diabetes, heart disease, those with weakened immune systems, adults over the age of 65, healthcare workers and childcare providers. Flu shots are covered under Medicare Part B as well as most insurance plans. Walgreens pharmacies also offer Fluzone HD, a high-dose influenza vaccine for those over age 65 and other qualified individuals, as well as Fluzone Intradermal, a shot administered with a smaller needle than the regular flu shot that is injected into the skin instead of the muscle.
