Volunteer Numbers Impacted By New Rules, Mandatory Quarantines
DALLAS (KRLD) -- The Liberian Community Association of DFW is holding a banquet next week to raise money for organizations like Samaritan's Purse, who are fighting the Ebola crisis in West Africa.
Samaritan Purse's International Projects Director Jim Walker says it's becoming difficult to find volunteers willing to go to Liberia.
"The increased restrictions have impacted the volunteers who are ready and willing to go to Liberia. A lot of it is just uncertainty," said Walker. "People want to know what the rules are. With the ever-changing rules and uncertainty whether we have federal rules, or state rules or local rules, people need to know."
Walker says that most individuals devote two to four weeks of their time as volunteers. Adding a mandatory 21-day quarantine period to the end prohibit many from participating.
Walker believes that many of the quarantine efforts are "reactive" and based on fear, not science.
