Video: Georgia Officers Shot By Suspect During Traffic Stop

LAVONIA, GA (CBSDFW.COM) -- Bodycam video released this week shows the moment when police officers in Georgia were shot during a traffic stop. One police officer was initially in intensive care and another had a bullet lodged in his hand after the incident in Lavonia, Georgia according to WSPA-TV in Greenville, SC.

Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the tragic incident happened around 8 p.m. Monday. During a stop, the officers discovered that the suspect was driving a vehicle stolen from Greenville, GA.
Chief Carlisle said it's believed that the officers were shot with a .40 caliber handgun.
The wounded officers were identified as Michael Schulman and Jeffery Martin.
Capt. Michael Schulman was shot in the armpit area beneath his vest, shattering a few ribs and puncturing a lung. He was out the ICU at Greenville Memorial Hospital as of Tuesday afternoon, the police chief said. The 50-year-old married father of two has been with Lavonia Police Department since 2001.
Martin, 22, is also married. The Army veteran has served with the department less than a year. Martin was released from the hospital, however a bullet remained in his hand from the shooting, Chief Carlisle said. A specialist will have to surgically remove the bullet.
In bodycam video released by the Lavonia Police Department, the suspect could be seen on video as officers approached. Schulman was questioning the suspect when shots rang out. He fell to the ground and could be heard asking for help from dispatchers via radio.
As Officer Schulman attempted to get up, blood could be seen on the video on the ground.
As Officer Martin came into view on the video after the shooting, blood could be seen on his hand.
The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Khari Anthony Dashaun Gordon.
Officials say Gordon was captured around 11 p.m. Monday after a manhunt.
Gordon appeared in court Tuesday where he was denied bond. His preliminary hearing is set for January 4 at 9:00am.
Chief Carlisle said a perimeter was quickly set up after the shooting. He thanked other law enforcement agencies who responded and assisted Lavonia Police Department.
Chief Carlisle called Monday a terrible day with four officers shot in the state of Georgia.
Gordon will be charged with two counts each of aggravated assault on a police officer, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Court records show that Gordon was out on bond for attempted murder in Greenville County and he had been stopped in Greenville on Dec. 9.
