VFW Post Searches For Fallen WWII Hero's Family
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 NEWS) - Medals and certificates fill a shadow box that used to belong to a North Texas family.
They describe the actions of fallen hero Private James Lynn Barnes, 33, who served in the Army and fought in Normandy in World War II.
A purple heart and a distinguished air medal with accompanying certificates are inside the shadow box.
One of which Sally Thorson believes was signed by President John F. Kennedy.
"I have learned lots of bits and pieces about him," says Thorson "I got a lot of information about this person, but I've come to a standstill."
Thorson knows Barnes died the day after D-Day, but she can't track down is his family.
She presumes the family was given the medals decades after Barnes death.
"I would like to return it to the people that it really belongs to," says Thorson "I'm sure they are missing it. I would be I would want it back."
The shadow box was dropped off anonymously at the VFW post in Arlington from a couple who found it in the attic.
For more than two years now, the VFW Post has been looking for Barnes' family.
"I see a man who served his country and has pretty much been forgotten -- and that hits home to all of us here," says VFW Post 6111 Commander Sid Turner. "We want to make sure that they are not forgotten."
Until family can be found, Barnes recognitions will stay at the VFW Post in Arlington.
"He made the ultimate sacrifice. It means a lot for me to find someone that this should go to belongs to," says Thorson.
