Veterans Honored At Downtown Dallas Ceremony

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - George P. Bush was in Dallas on Friday to act as the keynote speaker at the city's Veterans Day ceremony and parade. The Texas Land Commissioner's speech was preceded by a rendition of the National Anthem, a missing man flyover and other annual traditions.
Dozens of military recruits lined up in branches at Dallas City Hall to take the Oath of Enlistment. There were also booths set up where North Texans could write 'Thank You' cards to those military members who are currently serving.
The event was attended by a large number of veterans and their families, as well as those who simply wished to honor the men and women who have served for our country. The day became a teaching moment for some. For others, it was a time to reflect on the nation's status after a divisive presidential election earlier in the week.
"Trying to teach the kids about the significance of Veterans Day, what it means to honor veterans," said Marine Corps veteran LCpl. Mike Mercado. "We want to teach them that, even as veterans, we appreciate other veterans as well."
"The election and all that, just staying away from all the negativity, showing there's support," added Marine Corps veteran Sgt. Justin Alderete. "We have to be united as Americans regardless of what's going on."
The parade route began at the intersection of Houston Street and Young Street, traveled east along Main Street and ultimately snaked through downtown to conclude at Dallas City Hall. Tens of thousands of people were expected to be lining the streets for the hour-long parade.
