Veterinary Tips To Trim Down Your Pudgy Pet
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Losing weight is always a popular resolution for the new year, but what about extending that to your pet?
According to the latest veterinary surveys, nearly 25 percent of dogs and cats in Texas are overweight.
Frisco veterinarian Greg Bobo says at least a third of the family pets he treats are overweight or obese.
Bobo says there are some simple steps you can take to help your best friend slim down. "Always feed what their ideal weight should be not their current weight," he says.
He adds you should look for low or no-grain options with a protein source as the first ingredient.
Next, no table scraps. If you are set on feeding your pet people food, cut out 25 percent of the kibble and replace it with vegetables like green peas. "That 's a high fiber filler and animals, usually dogs, will feel full they're just not getting those calories out of it as well."
Use treats only to reward good behavior, and dog treats don't just have to be milk bones. "Baby carrots, green beans. We have a dog that loves ice. I mean she will go nuts for ice cubes. Zero calories."
