Verlander & Cain Named All-Star Starters

NEW YORK (CBS SPORTS) - American League All-Star manager Ron Washington has chosen Detroit's Justin Verlander as his starting pitcher for Tuesday night's game, CBS Sports has confirmed.

On the season, Verlander has a 2.58 ERA across 18 starts. The reigning AL MVP also leads the majors in innings, strikeouts and complete games. Although this will be Verlander's fifth trip to the All-Star Game, he has never before been named as starting pitcher.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports is also reporting that San Francisco's Matt Cain has been chosen by manager Tony La Russa as the All-Star starter for the National League. La Russa's decision comes despite widespread popular support for R.A. Dickey of the Mets to earn the starting nod.

On the season, Cain has a 2.62 ERA in 120.1 innings. He ranks second in the NL in innings and WHIP and fourth in strikeouts. On June 13 of this year, Cain threw the 22nd perfect game in major-league history.
