FORT WORTH (CBS11) - In East Fort Worth, neighbors are raising a warning that comes too late for many: lock your car doors!

Surveillance camera video captured the hooded suspect moving from house to house, pulling on door handles, searching for victims.

"If it was locked, he'd move on to the next car," says Thy Nguyen.

Finally, the suspect found what he'd been searching for at Nguyen's house: her mother's SUV had been left unlocked.

"She had cash and change, and he took all of that… he took a wedding invitation, might have thought it was a check…some clothes," said Nguyen.

Nguyen admits her emotions ran more toward anger, than mourning some major financial loss.

Still, other neighbors though worried that trying the doors of vehicles could have been just the beginning.

According to Fort Worth Police, six vehicles were ransacked in the neighborhood off I-820 and Trinity Boulevard last Monday night.

On several occasions, the suspect also used the garage door remote to access the garage and steal other items, including a flat screen TV.

"That's the scariest part because you know they can open your garage door," says Brian Seidner," and if the door to your house is unlocked, they're going to get everything and they may actually come and hurt you."

Seidner says he makes a habit of double checking the locks, so his vehicle wasn't targeted. Still, he says he was relieved to know that neighbors quickly turned to the networking site NextDoor to raise an alarm.

"We communicate about pretty much everything," added daughter Brianna Seigner. "Lost pets, cars being broken into, everything."

Still, it is warning that comes too late for Nguyen's parents: so take hers to heart.

"You should always double check and lock your cars, no matter what neighborhood you live in …because it's not always safe as you assume it would be."
