UTA Breaks Ground On New Science Building

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – The University of Texas at Arlington broke ground Thursday on a new $125 million Science and Engineering Innovation and Research (SEIR) building, which will be the signature research facility for life and health science at UTA.
Not only will it the most modern research facility, but will also have larger classrooms and a laboratory wing with glass walls so students attending classes will see the research using in a 'science on display' approach.
"This is another milestone in our journey to becoming the best university in Texas," UTA President Vistasp M. Karbhari said.
The building will feature state-of-the-art technology and the modern concept of research lab neighborhoods, which encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration. Each of the 12 research lab neighborhoods will accommodate multiple teams in a wide range of fields, from biology to bioengineering to computational research to nursing and kinesiology.
UTA associate dean of research for the College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Paul Fadel, added that a major benefit of the building will be the way it brings people together into 'neighborhoods' within the building.
"We're going to have a number of investigators in one area, on one floor, attacking a problem – disease, an abnormality – whatever it might be," says Fadel.
In addition, the building is designed and will be built using sustainable practices, with high energy efficiency heating and cooling systems, water conservation practices, and sustainable materials for flooring and interior finishes.
The new Science and Engineering Innovation and Research building is scheduled to open in 2018.
