Update: Kung Fu Saloon Responds To Racist Claims
UPTOWN DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Owners of the Kung Fu Saloon, an Uptown bar under scrutiny for discrimination claims, said a visit by city council members is evidence of its commitment to providing an enjoyable time to all patrons.
Dallas city council members and administrators vowed Tuesday to investigate the continued claims of discrimination at the uptown bar. After hearing concerns at a meeting, six members of the council visited the bar hours later.
The concerns, which were listed on online forums for months, received more attention last month when Deandre Upshaw said the bar wouldn't let him in. Upshaw and dozens of others claimed the bar used a nonexistent dress code to keep minorities from getting in during certain busy times.
Kung Fu Saloon released the following statement in regard to the discrimination claims:
"Kung Fu Saloon has always been a welcoming establishment, so we have taken this matter seriously. While accounts of what may have taken place vary, the important thing is that our team is fully committed to providing all our patrons an enjoyable time. Several City of Dallas officials dropped in for a short visit just the other day and got to experience this for themselves."
The watering hole opened less than 2 years ago. Its dress code policy was recently reviewed, updated and posted in a more visible location, according to a spokesperson for the bar. He said it's based on dress codes that many high schools use.
CBS 11 News has also learned that reports were filed with the local chapter of the NAACP and the ACLU regarding similar complaints at other bars on the same street.
