UNT Football Coach Dan McCarney Hospitalized
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Coach Dan McCarney, who was hired last year to turn around the fortunes of the UNT Mean Green, has been hospitalized.
In a statement to CBS 11 Sports, UNT Athletic Director Rick Villarreal said McCarney's wife Margy contact Villarreal on Sunday to let him know the coach was taken in after experiencing some 'medical difficulties significant enough that he was taken to the hospital.'
Villareal did not elaborate on what happened to McCarney out of privacy to the coach, but Iowa State Women's Basketball coach Bill Fennelly, who worked with McCarney when he was the head coach of the Cyclones football team, tweeted a message Monday afternoon saying, "Please keep Dan McCarney in your thoughts and prayers after a recent stroke."
McCarney has undergone multiple eye surgeries over the past few years, and could be seen on the sidelines and in interviews this past season wearing dark sunglasses.
McCarney, 58, came to North Texas to rebuild the program, taking over for former Southlake Carroll coach Todd Dodge. McCarney lead the team to a 5-7 overall record in 2011, his first season. He served as Iowa State's head coach for 12 seasons from 1995-2006.
