Unique Mashed Potato Dishes In DFW

Mashed potatoes are one of those foods that go with just about anything. They can sit on the side of a variety of dishes to add flavor and diversity to a plate. They are a comfort food because of the warm, delicious flavor and the memories of home cooking they stir up. Whether in a "meat and potatoes" type of plate or a pricier, upscale dish, mashed potatoes are often the ideal addition. The potatoes themselves can be cooked with a number of different forms and flavors. These restaurants serve some of the best mashed potatoes in a variety of ways.

Hattie's
418 N. Bishop Ave.
Dallas, TX 75208
(214) 942-7400
www.hatties.com

Hattie's is somewhat hidden in its location in the Bishop Arts District, but this creates the right-sized crowd for the small restaurant, and the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing dinner. Hattie's serves upscale American home cooking with a Southern influence. Several of the dishes are served on a bed of mashed potatoes. Some of the beds are actually made of sweet potato mash. Because it receives such high reviews, this creamy side with a funny name frequently outranks whatever main dish sits on it.

Truluck's
2401 McKinney
Dallas, TX 75201
(214) 220-2401
www.trulucks.com

Truluck's is a seafood and steak restaurant, also renowned for its carrot cake. A hidden gem on its menu is the parmesan mashed potatoes. The potatoes are served as an option with almost all of the entrees. They come in a generous portion in case other forks decide to taste off of your plate. If they don't come with your meal, you should definitely add them as a side. If you are up north a ways, try Truluck's Southlake location as well.

Nick & Sam's
3008 Maple Ave.
Dallas, TX 75201
(214) 871-7444
www.nick-sams.com

Nick & Sam's is an upscale steakhouse, located in Uptown Dallas. Although diners don't typically go just for the garlic mashed potatoes, they should. The garlic in these potatoes is not subtle and the creamy texture begs you to take another scoop. Nick & Sam's sides are served on their own plate, and are large enough to share with the table. The garlic mashed potatoes don't last long though as they are passed around, so if you intend to share, make sure you don't have a very big table.

Trinity Hall Irish Pub
5321 E. Mockingbird Lane
Dallas, TX 75206
(214) 887-3600
www.trinityhall.tv

Trinity Hall is an Irish pub with more than just beer on the menu. There is plenty of Irish cuisine to enjoy as well. The traditional shepherd's pie is one dish in which mashed potatoes play an important role. The casserole-like dish is made of ground beef, vegetables and gravy that are covered with a mashed potato "crust" and melted cheese. It is a unique way to eat your potatoes, and definitely warms you on a cold winter night. The pie also complements a number of the ever-changing beers on tap at Trinity Hall.

Jasper's
7161 Bishop Road
Plano, TX 75024
(469) 229-9111
www.kentrathbun.com/jaspers/plano

Jasper's executive chef is Kent Rathbun, also of Abacus, but Jasper's seems to get less press and fanfare than the latter. The classy Plano location serves what Rathbun calls "gourmet backyard cuisine." One of these tasty home dishes is the chunky Yukon garlic whippers. These chunky, delicious garlic mashed potatoes are served a la carte, so they can be added to any entrée you like.
