Unexpected Surprise For Some Collin County Burglary Victims

COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - They lost priceless jewelry, electronics and kitchen appliances. But the story about a man who broke in to North Texas homes and stole thousands of dollars in property may actually have a happy ending.
You might call the developments in a major burglary investigation we first reported on last month -- surprising.
When a burglar breaks a window and ransacks your home of valuables, you don't expect to ever see them again. But more than a dozen burglary victims in Plano are being 'reunited' with their belongings, because of good police work and a dumb thief.
Amanda Dillard's story is similar to others. She says she walked into her home and, "noticed glass everywhere." She says she started to move through the house methodically. "I came into the living room, looked around, [and] didn't see the iPad or the iPod."
The break-in meant Dillard's high school class ring and other priceless possessions were gone. "We were disappointed to lose some stuff that we use, and some sentimental jewelry and gifts from my husband," she said.
Plano police arrested Randall Dean Kirk last week. To their surprise, a detective found several rooms full of stolen property. It turned out to be the biggest recovery in the city's history.
Dillard remembers getting the call from police. "He said come down to the police station and see what you can find." Not only did she get her class ring back, Dillard got a call from police Friday saying they also have her iPad.
Plano police provided exclusive photos of the merchandise that they say would fill a 30x30 foot room.
Plano police spokesman Officer David Tilley explained that the thief held onto most of the stolen goods from 14 separate break-ins. Tilley says that just doesn't usually happen. "Unfortunately, the majority of the time the property winds up in a pawnshop or black market facility."
Investigators believe all of the robberies are connected.
Police say they recovered so much property the likelihood is great that some of came from burglaries outside of Plano.
Don't get too anxious if you've had a break-in at your home. Plano police are asking burglary victims not to call them. They assured us that if they have your property they will call you.
