Uncle Arrested For Greenville Teen's Murder
GREENVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - The uncle of a Greenville teen murdered six months ago is now behind bars, charged with her killing.
The Texas Rangers arrested Michael Vincent Moore, 57, Monday night at his home in Grand Prairie.
His niece, 16 year old Alicia Moore, disappeared November 2nd, after getting off her school bus about a block from home.
Four days later, a road crew in rural Van Zandt County discovered her body stuffed inside wicker trunk.
Authorities have been extensively testing the trunk and DNA found on the teen's body. It was those tests that ultimately led to the accused uncle.
Sheriff M.L. Ray said the arrest was a sad and shocking development for the rest of the family.
"I know this is not the outcome they were expecting," he said.
At Moore's home, an aunt refused to comment on the arrest.
"We just want time to get over the news that we just received late last night," said Jessica Byrd, the victim's aunt.
Sheriff Ray confirmed investigators collected possible evidence from their suspect's home including a car.
Ray said, Moore's motive remains uncertain.
After his arrest, he refused to answer investigators' questions.
A judge set bond at $10 million dollars.
In Greenville, 14 year Baleria Calderon, the victim's neighbor and childhood friend, noticed a police officer at her home late Monday.
After her friend's disappearance from her bus stop, she said, she started walking home together with her cousin.
"That's where we get off the bus , so it's scary somebody might have taken her and they could take us too," she said.
The arrest has her finally feeling relieved.
"Safer. I feel safer, " she said.
