TWU Gets Pay Raise If AA & US Airways Merge
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The largest union at American Airlines now has an agreement in place that will give members a nearly five-percent pay raise if American merges with U.S. Airways.
Ground workers at AA, represented by the Transport Workers Union (TWU), have been working on the details of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or weeks.
"The pilots and flight attendants have also done the same," explained TWU deputy director Robert Gless. "It's a memorandum with the merged carriers in the event that there is a court-approved merger between US Airways and American Airlines."
Gless said in the event of a merger the raise would instantly go into effect. "This is new money," he said. "This is four-point-three percent, [on the] day of court approval, that would be in our members pockets."
The TWU represents 20,000 American Airlines ground workers and that means employees across North Texas would be cashing the bigger paychecks. "It'll impact the DFW [Airport] workers as well as the workers over at the Alliance Maintenance Base," Gless said.
The 4.3-percent TWU raise would equal out to some $260 million in additional pay.
The MOU itself does require court approval.
AMR, American Airlines and American Eagle have all been operating under bankruptcy protection since November 2011.
