Two Rescued From Burning Dallas Condominiums
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Firefighters battled a stubborn three-alarm condominium fire overnight in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas while rescuing people trapped by the flames.
The fire was shooting through the roof when the first units arrived in the 4100 block of Holland Avenue, just before 1 a.m.
Three people had to be rescued from the second floor of the burning building.
"I just smelled something burning, and it woke me up," said resident Shirley Honeycutt, who was able to walk out of the building on her own.
Officials told CBS 11 News the extra manpower was needed because the fire had worked through the attic of the two-story, 12-unit condominium building.
Eleven people have been displaced from their homes - nine women and two men. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army are on the scene assisting firefighters and residents.
The fire officially was put under control just before 5:30 a.m., but fire crews are expected to stay on the scene for several hours as they mop up and monitor hot spots.
One condominium resident was slightly injured while trying to escape from his balcony. Officials have not yet determined what sparked the fire.
