Two Miles Of Highway 5 Closed North Of McKinney After Chemical Spill
MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) – A single-axle truck veered off Highway 5 north of McKinney at about 11:30 a.m., rolled down an embankment and spilled a non-hazardous cleaning solution it was carrying in a rain-filled ditch.
A hazardous materials team from the McKinney Fire Department is on scene. The truck driver was able to escape the wreckage with non-life threatening injuries, said Lonnie Haschel, spokesman with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The driver was treated at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital.
Highway 5 is closed from Weston Road to Highway 121 North of US Highway 380, about a two-mile stretch. A McKinney Fire Department spokesman said he expected that portion of Highway 5 to be closed for about six hours while crews work to pull the truck out.
A third-party company was called to clean up the mineral spirits that the truck spilled.
Collin County spokesman Tim Wyatt said one home was evacuated. Adjacent homes are empty, and he did not expect further evacuations.
The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at the First Baptist Church in McKinney, although no one was there as of 2:40 p.m., said spokeswoman Anita Foster.
