Two Men Arrested After Officer-Involved Shooting In Garland

GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Garland police arrested two men late Saturday night after responding to reports of shots fired in the 500 block of West Avenue F.
Police said when officers arrived at the location, they were directed to a residence where witnesses heard gunshots.
Officers located 25-year-old Omero Lopez in the backyard of the residence loading a handgun. Officers also observed 17-year-old Antonio Mendez-Villatoro at the residence firing a gun several times.
According to police, officers also contacted several male suspects at the residence and during the encounter, an officers fired one round at one of the suspects. The gunshot did not strike anyone.
Police said there were no injuries during the encounter.
Garland investigators found that Lopez was a convicted felon and is being charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Further investigation revealed that Lopez also fired the handgun that he possessed.
Police said Lopez and Mendez-Villatoro are being charged with discharging a firearm in certain municipalities.
Garland police identified the officer who fired his weapon as M.J. Mallison, who is a 16-year veteran with the department. Officer Mallison was placed on paid administrative leave, which police say is normal department procedure.
According to police, this is still an ongoing investigation.
