Two Dead After Wrong-Way Driver Crash In Denton
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Two people were killed Saturday morning in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 35W at FM 2449 in Denton.
Denton police spokesman Officer Orlando Hinojosa said several 9-1-1 calls came into the Denton emergency call center around 6:20am reporting a wrong-way driver going southbound in northbound traffic on I-35W.
He said a Honda Accord being driven by a man identified as Juan E. de la Cruz, 25, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it crossed the center median and struck another car head-on.
Two other cars behind the crash site took evasive action to avoid the crash, but wrecked, too.
De la Cruz, who carried an Illinois driver's license, and 55-year-old Amy Lynne Morrow of Rhome, the driver of the Highlander, were pronounced dead after the head on collision at the scene.
Two other cars behind the crash site, a Ford Mustang and Infiniti G35S, took evasive action to avoid the crash, but wrecked, too.
The women driving those vehicles were taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Denton, where they were treated and released.
"We don't know if alcohol was involved in this accident or not," Hinojosa said. "It's too early in the investigation to know."
The northbound lanes of I-35W were closed for four hours during the accident investigation.
The Denton County Medical Examiner will transport the deceased to the Tarrant County M-E's office for identification.
