NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - From sharing life-changing adventures with students, to changing our environment for the better... Katherine Greenberg is a shining example of someone who makes her life about others. And she did and continues to do it even when others thought she would fail.

Greenberg is the founder of the non-profit youth group Bright Light Volunteers and she takes students to other countries to experience first-hand how difficult life can be.

The group has traveled to seven countries including Ghana, Greece, and Cambodia. Greenberg said the inspiration came from her children. She says her mission is to help kids understand that education is a privilege, not a right.

Lessons like the ones she's now teaching are ones Greenberg realized when she became a mother at 17-years-old. She faced tough times with true grit and worked hard to get her college degree when there were a lot of people who thought her life would not recover.

When she's not traveling or handling her real estate business, the busy mother of two advocates for sustainability at home. The Greenberg family eats from their vegetable garden, and the ecologically conscious mom also raises fish in a aquaponic system and chickens for eggs.

Greenberg says growing up she lacked direction in her life, but believes her strong will and conviction showed her the way. Now she works daily to make the earth a better place by bringing the world closer.
