Trump Wants To End Birthright Citizenship For Some US-Born Babies
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBSDFW.COM) - President Trump, seeking to limit immigration to the U.S., is set to challenge a 150-year-old constitutional standard that anyone born in America is an American citizen. Mr. Trump told "Axios on HBO" that he plans to sign an executive order to "remove the right to citizenship for babies of non-citizens and unauthorized immigrants born on U.S.-soil."
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is on the same page as the president.
In 2015, Cruz said he supported ending birthright citizenship and proposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution if necessary, according to The Texas Tribune.
"I think birthright citizenship as a policy matter doesn't make sense," Cruz said in an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation" in 2015. "We have right now upwards of 12 million people living here illegally. It doesn't make any sense that our law automatically grants citizenship to their children because what it does is it incentivizes additional illegal immigration."
Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke O'Rourke has never called for ending birthright citizenship. On the contrary, he has said he supports a path to citizenship, according to the Texas Tribune, for children brought to the U.S. illegally. He has repeatedly said he's against a border wall and has called for the end of "the militarization of ICE" — Immigrant and Customs Enforcement — and for officials to "renew our commitment to refugees and asylum seekers."
Former Sheriff of Dallas County and Democratic Nominee for Governor of Texas, Lupe Valdez issued the following statement:
"We are a nation of immigrants and anyone born on this soil is an American. Our immigrant community is vital to the Texas economy -- they are our small business owners, our teachers, our first responders and our neighbors. Donald Trump's hateful rhetoric is a campaign ploy intended to incite fear before a critical and consequential election, and comes in the wake of plummeting poll numbers for both him and the Republican Party."
