DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Former Dallas Cowboy and Hall of Fame quarterback, Troy Aikman, told Sports Illustrated that he is expecting a former star college quarterback to return to Texas next year.
"As I sit here today, I believe that either Johnny Manziel or Robert Griffin III will be in Dallas as backup."
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones relayed a similar thought with Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan recently. Jones couldn't directly address Manziel or Griffin by name, but said he would be okay with taking "some risk" with the team's next backup quarterback.
"Our backup quarterback situation is the best 'now' move we could make," Jones said at the time.
Robert Griffin III's departure is a formality as Washington has inserted Kirk Cousins as the team's future QB. The Redskins will exercise their team option on the $16.2 million fifth and final year of Griffin's contract. Johnny Manziel is surely getting the boot barring a complete 180 from new Cleveland Browns Head Coach Hue Jackson.
While, the two Texas bred standouts may in fact be options for Dallas next season, the Cowboys coaching staff has their sites set on North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama this week.
Armed with the fourth pick in the draft, many have speculated that Dallas is interested in using that pick on a quarterback.
The question now remains, is there room for a former standout college quarterback and a 4th overall pick behind Tony Romo?
We'll soon find out.
