FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The man who police believe tried to leave the country after a hit and run crash is on trial. Omar Mohammed is accused of hitting a 73-year-old and leaving him for dead.

The hallway outside Criminal District Court #2 was jammed with prospective jurors Tuesday morning as the winnowing process got underway to seat a jury.

The issue began when Terry Pinkston was hit by a car while crossing an Arlington street in February, 2014. Police say he was left for dead. As he recovered in the hospital, police attempted to track down the alleged driver.

Days later, as Pinkston was being released from the hospital, authorities arrested a man at DFW Airport who was trying to board a plane to Amman, Jordan. Police identified him as Omar Mohammad, who lived about a block from the crash site. According to a tip Mohammad's car had a broken windshield repaired the day of the incident.

Mohammad was held without bond initially as a flight risk because he tried to leave the country. He later made bond, but had to surrender his passport and wear a monitoring device.

Opening arguments and witnesses are expected this afternoon.
