Tornado Hits West Texas Town Of Blanket
BLANKET (CBSDFW.COM) - A small town in West Texas is cleaning up after a tornado hit there on Monday night. The twister tore through the town of Blanket in Brown County, just west of the Comanche County line. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
The tornado ripped off a portion of the high school gymnasium's metal roof. Three more buildings were damaged at the town's all-grades school. An unknown number of homes also suffered roof damage.
Chief Chris Furry with the town's fire department witnessed the twister as it touched down, while in the process of rushing to the school to check on possible injuries. The tornado arrived at about 6:30 p.m. Monday night, just as a sports awards program was getting started in that damaged school gym.
Those attending the program took cover in the school's cafeteria. Students and parents huddled there for more than an hour as storms continued to pass overhead. Hail as big as golf balls pelted the school -- and the entire town -- in waves, even after the tornado had struck.
The tornado marked the start of summer for students in Blanket. Officials ended the school year three days earlier than expected because of damage done to the buildings. A new $100,000 heating and cooling system was torn off of the school's roof, with its parts and other assorted debris now just resting on the ground.
