Timbers Beat FC Dallas 3-2 In U.S. Open Cup

FRISCO (AP) — Darlington Nagbe had a goal and an assist to lead the Portland Timbers to a 3-2 win over FC Dallas in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night.

Portland scored all three of its goals in an 11-minute span in the second half to take a 3-1 lead. Dallas' David Ferreira almost tied the game in the closing seconds with a shot from just inside the penalty area that hit the right post.

The Timbers' Frederic Piquionne scored the decisive goal in the 72nd minute after he intercepted a pass from Dallas defender Wallace Zimmerman to goalkeeper Chris Seitz and fired a shot home from about 6 yards.

FC Dallas' Blas Perez finished with a goal and an assist. Perez's header in the 86th minute into the right corner of the net drew Dallas within one goal.

In the 61st minute, Nagbe tied the game at 1 when he dribbled around Dallas defender Zach Loyd and placed a shot into the right corner of the net from just outside the left post. Less than three minutes later, Nagbe assisted on Portland's second goal with a cross to Diego Valeri. Valeri tapped a shot into the corner of the net while stumbling to the ground.

Dallas' Je-Vaughn Watson fired a right footed shot into the net from 25 yards in the 15th minute for the game's first score. Perez set up the goal with a cross from the right flank to Watson, who was standing just outside the penalty circle.

The Timbers extended their unbeaten streak to 18 games across all competitions. This is the deepest Portland has advanced in the US Open Cup since its first appearance in 2004.
