IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - Fittingly, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's announcement that, in 2016, the league's Thursday night games will be live-streamed on Twitter was made via... Twitter.
The 10 Thursday night games will be broadcast by CBS and NBC, and simulcast on NFL Network, but comes with the addition of Twitter streaming those games. Plans include in-game highlights, pregame Periscope broadcasts from players and teams, and postgame content.
"Twitter is where live events unfold and is the right partner for the NFL as we take the latest step in serving fans around the world live NFL football," Goodell said in a press release. "There is a massive amount of NFL-related conversation happening on Twitter during our games and tapping into that audience, in addition to our viewers on broadcast and cable, will ensure Thursday Night Football is seen on an unprecedented number of platforms this season. This agreement also provides additional reach for those brands advertising with our broadcast partners."
Thursday Night Football on CBS and NFL Network drew an average of 13 million viewers in 2015, up 60 percent from 2013 when the games were solely on NFL Network. The 2015 season was the most-watched and highest-rated Thursday Night Football season ever.
Twitter beat out bids from Verizon Communications, Yahoo! and Amazon for the streaming rights.
