Through The Lens: Halloween
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Hello to the blog world. This is the first of many posts for our new "Through the Lens" blog. I have been shooting the segment since January 2010 and have wanted to give viewers a little more than just what they see on television.
The number one question people ask me is "how did you find out about that?" There have been a lot of fun and interesting stories that go with the stories I shoot. But the viewer doesn't have time for everything, so maybe we can give you some of that here. Call it the story behind the story or to steal the phrase from Paul Harvey, it's a "Now you know the rest of the story" kind of blog.
Today's story took me to the Dallas Arboretum for the pumpkin village and fall mums. It was full of cute little kids in costumes and moms and dads armed with cameras.
50,000 pumpkins and lots of blooming chrysanthemums makes for beautiful video and an easy Halloween/Fall story.
Sounds easy, but after covering the World Series for the past two weeks I walked in the door this morning with no idea what I was going to do today. I felt like Halloween was the easy fix to my problem and was looking for anything to fit that order for the day.
Then our satellite truck operator opened the garage door at the station and found this guy flopping on the ground.
I was trying to figure out if finding a bat on Halloween was some kind of omen (good or bad), but we got him scooped up into a box and I carried him off to the woods behind the station. It wasn't until he flitted off into the trees that I thought I should have called the bat world people to rescue him and made that little guy my story. Oh well!
After checking a house that was supposed to be crawling in Halloween decorations and a house that had a ghost pirate ship out front -- neither of which looked very spooky in the daylight -- I decided that pumpkins and kids sounded great.
Don't get me wrong; the Dallas Arboretum is beautiful, but I could probably turn a story there any day of the year just on the beautiful flowers. I wanted something out of the ordinary for this not so ordinary day, but beautiful pictures and cute kids make for a good story any time. I hope you enjoyed it. I'll be taking my family out to see it all before it comes down on Thanksgiving!
