Young Teens Arrested; Accused Of Attacking Vet
OAK CLIFF (CBSDFW.COM) -- Three juveniles have been arrested on capital murder charges stemming from the attempted robbery and death of an Oak Cliff man on Sunday night. Dallas Police said up to eight teens were involved in his death.
Sam Morris, 61, was walking home from the corner store when police said the teens tried to rob him. It happened in the 4700 block of Sunnyvale Street. He was less than a hundred yards from his house.
"They pursued him when I say pursed they chased him and they swarmed him," according to Dallas police Maj. Jeff Cotner with the crimes against persons unit. "It's senseless."
Police said Morris fought back and the boys pushed him into the street. A passing car then hit him and took off.
"We believe that those injuries that he sustained when he went into the roadway most likely caused his death," said Major Cotner.
Investigators said the youngest in the group that watched the attack was 10 years old.
Police have arrested a 13-year-old and two 14-year-old boys who they believe beat Morris.
"I was about to cry when I heard that," said younger brother Robert Morris "He would still be here if they hadn't pushed him out on the street."
Robert said his brother was diabetic and walked with a limp. He said he believes he was targeted.
Sam Morris was a cook in the Army and had just moved in with his younger brother, who said hearing about the arrests doesn't bring him much relief. "There is not much relief. I lost my brother."
Robert was out of town burying his mother-in-law when he heard about what had happened.
Police are still looking for the driver of the car who hit Morris and they said they have conflicting reports about the type of car involved. Investigators also want to talk to the good Samaritans who tried to help the victim.
Morris' funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Sandra Clark Funeral Home in Dallas. His brother says he will be buried at DFW National Cemetery.
