DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Two suspects involved in a car burglary crashed into a Dallas Police Department squad car then, just minutes later, plowed head on into a vehicle driven by an off-duty firefighter early Thursday morning. The incident started just before 1:00 a.m. when two men in a white Chevrolet El Camino took some items out of an SUV in Deep Ellum, police said.

As the suspects fled from the scene, their vehicle blew through a traffic light at Good Latimer Expressway and Elm Street and hit the front corner of the squad car. The officers inside were not hurt, but their vehicle was too damaged to pursue the suspects.

Other police began searching for the suspects but, a short time later, police received reports that the car had been involved in a wrong-way, head-on crash near the intersection of Cadiz Street and Akard Street.

The driver of the El Camino fled the scene and was arrested a short distance away, police said. The passenger in the El Camino was critically injured and taken to the hospital. The driver of the oncoming car -- an off-duty female Dallas firefighter -- suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

Police have not said what charges the suspects will face. Both intersections were shut down as police conducted an investigation.
