Thief Pretends To Be New Employee; Robs Register

MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - What appears to be a creative thief robbed a Shell station in Mesquite Sunday.

Mesquite Police say around 4:00 p.m. on March 13, the suspect told the clerk at the store on Clay Mathis Road he was a new employee there to train.

Without questioning the claim, the clerk started showing him how to use the register and helped him while he checked out several customers.

The suspect is seen on video taking $198 out of the register when the clerk wasn't looking.

After about 20 minutes, the manager came from the backroom and asked the suspect who he was and told him to get away from the register.  After a short conversation the suspect ran from the store.

Police say the suspect ran away he dropped a handgun which he stopped to pick up.

Suspect description: 19-23 years old, black man, wearing dark jeans and a black ¾ length jacket with a high collar, black sneakers with white trim on the bottom, and a knit cap possibly covering dreadlocks or braids.
