The 'Too Early' Evals From Cowboys In San Diego

By Mike Fisher | @fishsports

SAN DIEGO (CBSDFW) -- Late in the night is too early to know.

Too early to know about deep personnel evaluation from Thursday's 17-7 preseason-opening loss to San Diego, though rookies like Lucky Whitehead, Randy Gregory, Byron Jones, La'el Collins and Jameill Showers certainly had their moments.

Too early to know about the impending return to the field of offensive weapons Darren McFadden (hamstring), Lance Dunbar (ankle) and Dez Bryant (hamstring), all of whom are hoping to participate Saturday when the team is back in Oxnard for another week of camp.

Too early to know about the severity even of rookie running back Gus Johnson's shoulder injury, which the team says is a separation.

And what does the street free agent from Stephen F. Austin say?

'It'll be fine," said Johnson, who banged in for Dallas' only score and obviously does not want to return to the street. "I don't plan on missing any time."

That seems unrealistic for Johnson and for tight end James Hanna (sprained knee). But Dallas should be getting that running back help soon, will now have a chance to look at rookie Geoff Swaim as a tight end prospect, and will work to clear up the only real mess of the night -- a trio of fumbles lowlighted by QB Brandon Weeden's comical muff.

'I didn't catch it," said Weeden, starting in place of the resting Tony Romo. "It was a disaster after that."

Weeden is right, so that's one evaluation that's not too early to make.
