Other Football Game Brings Big Bucks For Frisco
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - While the Cotton Bowl may be the big football game in North Texas this weekend, it's not the only game.
Saturday afternoon, Sam Houston State takes on North Dakota State for the NCAA DI Football Championship at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco. The City of Frisco estimates the economic impact of the game to be $5.9 million.
Friday night, nearly 8,000 North Dakota State fans held a rally at the Dr Pepper Ballpark. Even more are expected to attend the game.
"We are so pumped," said Frances Leier, who drove 18 hours from North Dakota. "It's me and 15,000 of my best friends from North Dakota that traveled down here and we are going to yell and scream."
They are also going to and have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on food, hotels and entertainment in the area. Adam Khaldi, the manager of the Blue Goose Cantina in Frisco, said game day last year was the restaurant's "busiest day of the year."
This is the third consecutive year the City of Frisco has hosted the championship game. Last month, the NCAA extended its contract with the city for the game through 2016.
Frisco Mayor Maher Maso said he wants to see the Division I Championship game in Frisco for years to come. "I'm not shy about that," he said. "When I went to Indianapolis to speak to the NCAA, we want to make this a permanent home and we want to bring in other championship games here."
