The Latest On Romo's Back From Inside Cowboys HQ
IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - The Dallas Cowboys are holding on to the slimmest of hopes that quarterback Tony Romo's season isn't over due to what sources tell 105.3's Mike Fisher is a disc-related problem in his back that is related to last April's surgery on the same area.
"We're coming up with a course of action," coach Jason Garrett said Monday, as the club prepares for Sunday's playoff-determining visit from the Eagles. "We'll evaluate it on a day-by-day basis. The MRI was part of the evaluation. There's a series of things to be done.''
Garrett's prognosis may be too rosy. Sources say the determining factor is whether a bulging or herniated disc is pressing against a nerve in such a way as to impact his motor skills or just cause pain. As well as Romo played in leading Sunday's dramatic 24-23 victory at Washington, he did appear affected by more than pain. And when the team returned to DFW, he struggled to move from the charter flight to his car and did so with the assistance of friend and teammate Jason Witten.
"You just play through it,'' Romo said on Sunday night. "It's football.''
Sources also tell us that despite public denials, the back injury is indeed related to the reported "cyst-removal'' surgery of last spring. 105.3 The Fan reported then that the procedure performed on Romo did indeed include the removal of a cyst but that it was near enough to the spine to be more invasive that the team reported. Romo underwent the procedure in April and did not resume full team workouts until late July.
Indications are that was a "partial discectomy,'' a shaving-down of the disc to relieve pressure against the spine. A similar surgery may now be necessary, sources say.
105.3 The Fan is told that this injury and any ensuing surgery is not career-threatening.
While the Cowboys "have not made that determination (that Romo is out) at this point,'' as Garrett said, the club is preparing for veteran backup Kyle Orton to start against the Eagles and will also likely sign a third QB. Orton has a career record of 35-34. The Cowboys are 6-7 in games without Romo since he became the full-time starter in 2006.
