Text Leads To Police Shootout In Grapevine

GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) - A man in Grapevine texted his mother Wednesday night just after 10:00 p.m. to say that he had been shot, but what happened next was a strange situation that led to officers firing shots, a standoff with police, and that man waking up in the hospital. The odd incident happened at an apartment complex located next to Grapevine Mills Mall.

The still unidentified man told his mother that he had been shot, and included a photo with his text message. His mother called the police to report the situation, and authorities went to go help the injured man. But when they arrived and talked to him outside of the apartment unit, he started to fire shots at officers.

The suspect missed. Officers returned fire, but they also missed. Then, according to authorities, the man went back into his apartment unit and shot himself in the head. After that, he walked outside and surrendered. Police said that it is unclear if the man actually had a previous gunshot wound as he had told his mother. "My understanding is the text showed him being bloody, but I don't know if he had a gunshot wound at the time. But he just said he'd been shot," said Lt. Todd Dearing with the Grapevine Police Department.

The man was transported by air ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Nobody else was injured during the incident. Police evacuated residents in the area when the situation first began.

Officials are not sure what could have led to the man's distraught text message or the standoff that followed.
