Irby Returns To Texas 3 Years After Gruesome Injury

AUSTIN (AP)  After three long and painful years, Texas tight end Blaine Irby is returning to the football field.

The Longhorns open the season Saturday night against Rice and Irby will be there to face the same team that nearly ended his career with a devastating knee injury.

Irby was a promising sophomore in 2008 when a tackle shredded the ligaments and nerves in his right knee. Irby was given less than a 5 percent chance of even walking normally again.

Irby endured three surgeries to repair the knee and hundreds of hours of painful rehabilitation.

But Irby chased a dream to return to the field. The senior is now listed as the starting H-back for the Longhorns, who are trying to rebound after a disappointing 5-7 season.
