Texas Unemployment Remains At 6.4 Percent

AUSTIN (AP) - State officials say the Texas unemployment rate has remained steady for the third straight month at 6.4 percent.

The Texas Workforce Commission said Friday the state unemployment rate for April remains a full point below the national rate of 7.5 percent.

Midland continues to maintain the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3 percent, followed by Odessa at 3.7 percent.

Conversely, the Metropolitan Statistical Area of McAllen-Edinburg-Mission continues to lead the state with an April high of 10.5 percent. It was followed by Brownsville-Harlingen at 9.9 percent.

The commission says Texas' seasonally adjusted, nonfarm employment expanded by 33,100 jobs in April. The state added 326,100 jobs for the year ending in April.

The agency says the state's civilian labor force is at an all-time high with 12.7 million workers.
