Texas Tech To Start Freshman QB In Opener At SMU

LUBBOCK (AP) - Texas Tech will start a true freshman at quarterback to open the season, though who it is won't be known until the offense takes the field Friday night at SMU.

Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield have been vying for the starting spot since red-shirt sophomore Michael Brewer, last year's backup to Seth Doege, reinjured his back a few weeks ago.

First-year coach Kliff Kingsbury says both are ready physically and come from programs that ran similar offenses to the Red Raiders'.

Kingsbury has turned to freshmen before. At Houston in 2010 it was true freshman David Piland. Johnny Manziel, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy, was a redshirt freshman last year under Kingsbury, the Aggies offensive coordinator.

Webb played at Prosper and Mayfield played at Lake Travis.
