Texas Sports Hall Of Fame Getting New Members
WACO (AP) - A Super Bowl champion, a Super Bowl coach, a Heisman Trophy winner, two national championship college coaches and the winningest high school football coach in state history are part of the newest class to be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
The 10-member class to be inducted in February includes Texas A&M women's basketball coach Gary Blair, whose Aggies won last season's national championship, and Texas football coach Mack Brown, who led the Longhorns to the 2005 national title.
Also in the class is 1989 Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware from Houston, who threw for 4,699 yards with 44 touchdowns while the Cougars averaged 54 points a game that season.
G.A. Moore has won 412 games and eight state championships since his prep coaching debut in 1962 at Bryson. He also coached at Pilot Point, Celina and Sherman before taking his current job at Aubrey in 2009.
Beaumont native Bubba Smith was a standout defensive end at Michigan State before going to the NFL and being part of the 1970 Baltimore Colts that were Super Bowl champions.
Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith, a Gladewater native, played on three state championship teams for Big Sandy High School. He has spent the last 23 years coaching in college and the pros, and the 2006 Bears were NFC champions.
Fred Couples was an All-American golfer at the University of Houston from 1977-80 before a PGA Tour career that includes 15 victories.
Dave Parks was an All-SWC receiver at Texas Tech in 1962 and 1963 before playing 10 NFL seasons as a tight end for San Francisco, New Orleans and Houston.
Tobin Rote, a member of the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame who threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in the 1957 NFL title game, is a San Antonio native who was a four-year letterman at Rice.
Shawn Andaya was a softball pitcher at Texas A&M from 1984-87 who set NCAA career records with 1,234 strikeouts as the Aggies appeared in three national championship games.
