Texas Sending 4 New Reps To Congress
AUSTIN (AP) - Texans will send four new representatives to Congress this year, the result of adding 4.3 million residents between 2000 and 2010. Republicans will continue to dominate the delegation in Washington.
The most competitive congressional race to be decided Tuesday pits incumbent Republican Quico Canseco against state Rep. Pete Gallego. They are vying to represent the 23rd district, which stretches from San Antonio to El Paso. Former Democratic Congressman Nick Lampson is also in a tough race against state Sen. Randy Weber to replace the retiring Ron Paul.
A U.S. federal court drew the congressional district maps for this election after declaring the Legislature's maps unconstitutional.
Out of the four new districts, two are minority-dominated, with one stretching across central Fort Worth and Dallas, while the other is centered on Brownsville.
