Texas Senator Ted Cruz To Run For President
UPDATE Monday, March, 23: "I'm running for President and I hope to earn your support!" is the tweet, Senator Ted Cruz sent out to followers at midnight eastern time. Senator Cruz posted a 30 second campaign ad with his tweet.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBSDFW.COM) - A senior campaign advisor tells CBS 11 that Texas Senator Ted Cruz will announce Monday he's running for President in 2016.
The Senator is scheduled to speak at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The announcement is more than he's filing an exploratory committee, but that he is in fact launching his official bid.
Cruz is a first term Senator, who has become a star among Tea Party supporters not only in Texas, but nationwide.
Cruz is among the candidates with Texas ties looking toward a run for the White House.
During his last days in office, former Texas Governor Rick Perry told me he would announce his intentions in either May or June.
Since leaving office, Perry appears to have been campaigning non-stop, speaking to and meeting with residents in Iowa and New Hampshire.
Perry is hoping Republicans will give him a second chance after his failed 2012 campaign and "oops" moment during one of the debates.
In addition, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who grew up in Texas, has expressed an interest in running.
He recently appeared at the SXSW festival in Austin and has hired Texans to be part of his team.
Paul is the son of former Texas Congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul.
Former two term Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who also grew up in Texas and has obvious ties to two past Presidents, is all but running in 2016 as well.
While Bush has a conservative record as Florida Governor, he has come under criticism by some for not being conservative enough.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, surgeon and conservative activist Dr. Ben Carson, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, former Arkansas Governor and Fox News contributor Mike Huckabee, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are also considering a run for the White House.
