Texas Racing Commission Votes For New Form Of Electronic Gambling

AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas Racing Commission has voted to retain a rule to allow a new form of electronic gambling at tracks.

Commissioners voted Tuesday to let Texas horse and dog tracks install terminals for so-called historical racing, in which people place bets on already-run races that no longer include identifying information.

Allowing such gambling sets up a fight with some Texas lawmakers, including Sen. Jane Nelson, who have been critical of historical racing and could withhold funding for the commission.

Nelson and fellow lawmakers must soon approve funding for the panel, or it will be forced to close. The withholding of funding for the commission would likely mean the end of dog and horse racing in Texas, because there wouldn't be a regulator.
