HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston-area man has been charged with conspiring to support the Islamic State group.
A U.S. Attorney's Office statement says Asher Abid Khan was arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
A criminal complaint says the 20-year-old Spring resident and a friend planned to travel to Turkey, then Syria, with the intent of joining and fighting with Islamic State.
The documents allege Khan's friend made it to Syria with Khan's help. They say Khan, who had been living in Australia, made it to Istanbul but then his family deceived him into returning to Texas.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in federal prison. Federal court records list no attorney for him who could comment on the charge.
