Texas House Holds Hearings On Redistricting
AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas House plans to begin hearings on adopting new political maps, with Republicans wanting to ratify those drawn by a federal court.
The House Redistricting Committee is scheduled to hear testimony Friday on the court's maps. Minority groups and lawmakers told a Senate Committee on Thursday that they felt those maps still discriminate against Hispanic and African American voters.
Gov. Rick Perry called the Legislature into special session on Monday to "ratify and adopt" the maps used for the 2012 election. But minority lawmakers claim the court drew those maps as a temporary solution. Since then a Washington DC court has declared the Legislature's original maps intentionally discriminated against minorities.
Democrats want the Legislature to adopt completely new maps, or allow the San Antonio court to draw new ones.
