Texas Health Care Enrollment Exceeds Forecast

DALLAS (AP) -- More than 733,000 Texans have registered for health insurance through the federal marketplace, far exceeding earlier projections for the state.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday released the latest enrollment figures for each state. Fourteen states, along with the District of Columbia, are establishing their own marketplaces, but of those that are not, Texas has the second highest enrollment rate. Federal figures show 733,757 Texans enrolled from Oct. 1 to April 19.

Only Florida had a higher number of enrollees in that period, with more than 983,000 signing up.

The Texas numbers represent a significant jump from the approximately 295,000 residents who had enrolled as of March 1.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had projected 629,000 would enroll by an initial March deadline.
