Texas Filibuster Star Davis Raises Nearly $1M

AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — State Senator Wendy Davis, who staged a filibuster that helped delay approval of sweeping abortion restrictions, says she raised nearly $1 million in the final two weeks of June.

The Fort Worth Democrat said Monday that contributions totaled $933,000 from June 17-30, and that $580,000 of that came from Texas donors. State rules prohibited officeholder fundraising from Jan. 1 until that period because the Legislature was in session.

Davis now has $1.06 million cash-on-hand.

She became a national sensation for her 11+ hour filibuster that temporarily killed in the Texas Legislature a bill imposing new limits on abortion.

Governor Rick Perry convened another special legislative session, however, and lawmakers passed the bill Friday. He is expected to sign the bill into law in the next few days.

Davis says she's focused on re-election next year. Some, though, have urged her to run for governor.
