Texas Counties May Email Tax Bills In 2012
FORT WORTH (AP) - Texas property owners may get their next tax bills by email because of a new state law that gives counties that option.
Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector Ron Wright says it's a "step into the 21st century for the tax office."
Rep. Charlie Geren pushed the measure unopposed in the Legislature. The Republican whose House district is north and west of Fort Worth credits Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price with the money-saving idea when she was the tax collector-assessor.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Monday that several counties are considering implementing the service because it's cheaper to send the bill electronically than through the mail, which requires printing and postage costs.
Scott Porter, president of the state's Tax Assessor-Collector Association, said many counties are working out the details before deciding.
