Texas Company Part Of Thousands Of Holiday Meals

TYLER (CBSDFW.COM) - Folks from coast-to-coast folks are getting ready and planning their family holiday meal around turkeys that come from Texas.

In the piney woods, less than 100 miles from the Louisiana state line, Greenberg Smoked Turkey provides pit-cooked poultry for a little more that four bucks a pound.

Samuel Isaac Greenberg founded the business in 1938 and now his grandson, Sam Greenberg, runs the company.

While the company is based in Tyler, the idea for their mail order business actually began in Dallas.

"A family in Dallas ordered some turkeys and my father put 'em in an old gum box, that he'd gotten at a candy store, and filled it with straw and a turkey and put 'em on the train and shipped 'em to Dallas," Sam Greenberg said of the company inception. "That's when my father said he got in the mail order business."

Most of those mail orders are now taken over the internet.

Many customers said they've been buying the spice-rubbed, hickory-burnished Greenberg turkeys for three and four generations. And those claims are backed up by numbers. By Christmas, more than 200,000 Greenberg turkeys will have been 'gobbled' up.
