Texas Coach Known For Anguished TV Call Dies

AMARILLO (AP) - Mike Zoffuto, a veteran Texas high school football coach whose television call of the stunning end of the 1994 Plano East-Tyler John Tyler football playoff achieved national fame, has died at age 65.

His sister, Teri Sweatman, says Zoffuto died Sunday in Amarillo en route to a hospital after choking at a state veterans home. He had been diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2008.

Zoffuto coached at numerous Texas high schools but gained national fame as an analyst for a local cable telecast of the Plano East-Tyler John Tyler game at Texas Stadium. When a Plano East rally was negated by a game-winning touchdown return by John Tyler, an anguished Zoffuto said, "God bless those kids," paused, then said, "I'm sick. I think I'm gonna throw up."
