Texas A&M Leaders Visit Charter School, Apologize For Race Incident

DALLAS (AP) - The head of the Texas A&M University System has visited a Dallas school and apologized for racial insults some minority students say they faced while visiting the flagship campus.
Chancellor John Sharp and Texas A&M President Michael Young met privately Tuesday with the junior class at Uplift Hampton Preparatory. State Sen. Royce West joined the A&M leaders at the public charter school in South Dallas.
The men had expressed outrage over treatment of the teens, including black and Latino youths, who visited the College Station campus last week. University officials are investigating allegations that some white A&M students made racial comments or wore Confederate flag jewelry.
A&M Student Body President Joseph Benigno on Tuesday presented handwritten letters from thousands of university students disavowing racism and supporting the high school students.
