'Terrible Tuesday' For DFW Sports
If this all would've gone down on April 1 then, well, yeah we get it. April Fool's and all. It's a joke. A mean prank. Laugh it off.
But, alas, the calendar said April 2, and it will forever be remembered in Dallas-Fort Worth sports as Terrible Tuesday. The day the Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks and Texas Rangers each absorbed excruciating losses.
Funny thing, one of the teams won a game.
The Stars raised their white flag, trading lone attraction Jaromir Jagr just a week after dumping fan favorite Brendan Morrow. The Stars are admittedly going nowhere this season – or next – and are now officially in long-term rebuilding mode.
The Mavericks, meanwhile, lost a must-win game to the Lakers, and it wasn't even competitive. Dallas' odds and beards grew perhaps irreversibly long after the 20-point drubbing in L.A. Chasing the 8th and final playoff spot in the NBA's Western Conference, the Mavs will now have to go 7-1 down the stretch if the Jazz and Lakers finish 3-4.
In other words, the Mavs' 12-year run of post-season berths is about to expire. And with the Stars also not making the playoffs, DFW is halfway to its first year without a single playoff team since way back in 1989.
The Rangers have the best shot to make the playoffs, but after last night's heartbreak in Houston, they still don't have a no-hitter nor a perfect game since 1994.
Yu Darvish dazzled all night against the Astros, striking out 14 with a dominating slider. In the 9th inning he had 2 outs when light-hitting Marwin Gonzalez – yep, we were glued to Marwin vs. Yu – lined a single between Darvish's wicket. The 7-0 triumph was easily the most disappointing win in franchise history and the biggest heartbreak since Game 6 of the 2011 World Series in St. Louis.
And, no, even if Darvish wins 20 games and the Cy Young and even if Mark Cuban drafts Baylor's Brittney Griner in a sad marketing ploy, neither will make us forget our Terrible Tuesday.
